The Craiova Art Museum has been housed since 1954 by the Jean Mihail Palace, built between 1898 and 1907 in the late Baroque style according to the plans of the french architect Paul Gotterau.
The heritage of the Craiova Art Museum consists of over 8,000 European and Romanian works of art. The most illustrious names of Romanian painting and sculpture are included: Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Nicolae Tonitza, Ștefan Luchian, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Theodor Pallady, Eustațiu Stoenescu, Ion Țuculescu, Gheorge Anghel, Dimitrie Paciurea. It also includes Dutch, Flemish, Italian and French school paintings from the XVII-XIX century, also romanian and foreign decorative art. The most valuable of the pieces owned by the museum are six of the works of the titan of universal modern art, Constantin Brâncuși: Vitellius, Head of a Girl, Head of a Child, Torso Fragment, Miss Pogany and the Kiss.
