The most important theater festival in Romania, with wide recognition and international participation, it has taken place every two years in Craiova, bearing the name of the great English playwright: The International Shakespeare Festival. The first edition took place in 1994 and since then, through its initial success, it has become more and more known worldwide with each edition.
The Festivall has presented works of the most famous international directors such as Peter Brook, Robert Wilson, Declan Donnellan, Lev Dodin, Eimuntas Nekrosius, and Silviu Purcarete, Thomas Ostermeier, Oskaras Korsunovas, Yoshihiro Kurita, Yun Taek-Lee, Elizabeth LeCompte, Eimuntas Nekrosius. The main organizers of the festival are the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater from Craiova, and the "William Shakespeare" Foundation.
The performances do not take place only in Craiova, but also in different locations in Oltenia and in the capital of Romania, Bucharest.
During the festival there are film screenings, conferences, seminars, design and criticism, workshops on acting, directing, theater design, painting, photographic and philatelic exhibitions.
In the opinion of numerous Romanian and foreign theater critics who have attended the festival over time, this is one of the best thematic European festivals.
Craiova International Shakespeare Festival was awarded the Prize for Excellence granted by Uniter, the Romanian Theater Association.
